In this age of upwardly-spiraling health costs, more and more businesses are coming to the realization that the answer to this problem lies in a proactive effort to improve the health and wellness of its employees. Once the decision has been made to implement a health and wellness program, the first logical - and crucial - step is to identify those factors that are currently eating away at the company’s bottom line, as well as those that threaten to do so in the future. The tool of choice within the health and wellness industry for objectively identifying these health risk factors is the Health Risk Assessment.

Typically administered either electronically or on paper, health risk assessments are comprised of a series of questions designed to evaluate the employee’s current health status and lifestyle. The ultimate aim of health risk assessments are to evaluate the degree of risk present for chronic disease (i.e. cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes). 

However, health risk assessments may also look for other factors such as stress, ergonomics and cumulative stress disorders (i.e. carpal tunnel). Many health risk assessments offer instant results once completed, allowing the employee immediate feedback on their health risks. This feedback is a critical step in the health risk assessment process, as results are meant for both the business and the employee to see.

Health risk assessments are not meant to simply be a one-time, initial tool to help get a program rolling. To be most effective, health risk assessments must be given periodically so that employees can monitor and track any progress or digression. Based on the results of the Health Risk Assessments, a business may choose to implement an incentive program in an effort to help motivate employees to make beneficial changes.

For example, if the health risk assessments identify a trend of low physical activity levels amongst employees, they may choose to offer a paid day off for those employees logging in 20 total hours of outside walking over the course of a month.

While health risk assessments are but one component in a comprehensive wellness program, they are a critical component, affording both the business and the employee an opportunity a broad overview of the employee’s present and future health status.

Health risk assessments are more affordable and widely-available than ever, making them accessible to anyone who desires to control health costs and improve the well-being of their employees. However, it is critical that the results of the Health Risk Assessments are reviewed and acted upon if they are to bring favorable results for anyone involved.
